Identification
14.5-15cm. Brown back and top of head, rufous tail, rufous patches on wings, brown belly spotted with white, bright white chest and throat, medium bill, slightly upturned, and sharply pointed, short tail tipped with short spines from the tips of the tail-feathers. Sexes similar.
Distribution
From central Chile and nearest parts of Argentina to southernmost regions of Tierra del Fuego.

Habitat
Deciduous temperate forest dominated by southern beech (Notophagus).
Behaviour
The diet includes insects and other invertebrates taken on the trunks of trees and branches, sometimes moving downwards head-first.
It builds a nest within a cavity dug into rotten wood of a branch. Both parents incubate the eggs and rear the nestlings.
