Identification

9·7–11·8 cm (3¾-4½ in)

• Long d-curved bill
• Reddish to black upper mandible
• Long white streak behind the eye

Caribbean: found only in Trinidad
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies^[1]:

• P. g. andinus:

• East Colombia (south to Meta and Vichada)

• P. g. guainumbi:

• Venezuela to the Guianas, northern Brazil and Trinidad

• P. g. thaumantias:

• East Bolivia to eastern Paraguay, central and eeastern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina

Habitat

Savanna, cerrado and wet grasslands.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of nectar from low-growing garden flowering plants.
