Identification
16cm. White and black plumes of feathers on the head, short and orange bill, yellow eye. Young birds are very drab and lack the ornate feather plumes and orange bill of the adult.
Distribution
Aleutian Islands, Alaska and on some islands off Siberia. Winters south to Japan.
Taxonomy
This species is monotypic.[1]
Habitat
Open ocean.
Behaviour
- Breeding: 1 egg is laid in a rocky crevice and is incubated by both parents who also feed the young.
- Diet: Includes crustaceans and krill. They feed within 16 km of land.
