West Solomons Owl - BirdForum Opus

Identification

Rust coloured upperparts, sometimes spotted or barred white. Grey-brown facial disk, yellow eyes, grey beak and white eyebrows. Throat has a wide, white band. The belly is creamy and unmarked, giving the appearance of a young owl. Eyes are yellow to orange.

Distribution

Central and northern Solomon Islands.

Taxonomy

One of four species formerly viewed as a single species, Solomons Boobook. These birds were formerly placed in genus ;Ninox.

Subspecies

Four subspecies are recognized[1].

  • A. j. eichhorni
  • Northern Solomon Islands (Buka, Bougainville and Choiseul)
  • A. j. jacquinoti
  • Central Solomon Islands (Santa Isabel and San Jorge)
  • A. j. mono
  • Mono (northwest Solomon Islands)
  • A. j. floridae
  • central Solomon Islands (Florida Group)

Habitat

Forests, edge and sometimes in gardens with tall trees, in lowlands and foothills up to 2000 m asl.

Behaviour

Nocturnal, roosting during the day.

Vocalisation

Known to sing duets between male and female.
