- Mellisuga minima
Identification
6-7cm. Metallic green upperparts, purple black wings, black tail, white throat and chin speckled black, white breast, belly, and vent, metallic green sides. Female - yellow green above, pure white below.
Distribution
Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies recognized:
- M. m. minima in Jamaica
- M. m. vielloti in Hispaniola, Gonâve, Tortue, Saona, Catalina and Île-à-Vache
Habitat
Moist lowland forests.
Behaviour
It builds the second smallest nest of all birds, about the size of half a walnut shell (the Bee Hummingbird builds the smallest nest).
