Tumbes Tyrannulet - BirdForum Opus

Identification

12 cm. Overall a small brownish-grey flycatcher with two indistinct wing bars and a longish tail.

  • Upperside brownish-grey
  • Wings more dusky but with pale feather edges and two indistinct buff wing bars
  • Face greyish
  • Supercilium long but not strongly contrasting
  • Throat grey
  • Breast olive-grey, paler at center
  • Underside olive-grey to pale grey
  • Eyes brown
  • Bill dark with pink base to lower mandible

Distribution

South America: south-western Ecuador to north-western Peru.

Taxonomy

This species was previously considered a part of Mouse-colored Tyrannulet which has been split into several species.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • N. m. tumbezanus:
    • Arid tropical south-western Ecuador to north-western Peru (south to north-eastern Lambayeque)
  • N. m. inflavus:
    • Arid tropical north-western Peru (Lambayeque to northern Lima)

Habitat

Mostly dry areas including desert scrub, dry woodland and forest and gardens, but in somewhat more humid areas at higher elevation. Found up to 2550 m but mostly below 2000 m asl.

Behaviour

Eats both insects and fruit, for example mistletoe.

Vocalisation

Dawn song is harsh and grating three syllable dzzree-dzzree-DJEE. Calls during the day variable, often given as duets, mostly with a prominent sound that has a buzzy to squeaky quality, followed by zero to two more subdued sounds.
