Identification
14·5–15·5 cm (5¾-6 in)
Male
- Black with white streaks on crown and upper back
- Rest of back Black with rufous streaks
- Rufous rump
- Black wings with rufous flight feathers
- Blackish-grey, graduated, white-tipped tail
Distribution
South America: found from Colombia to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Four subspecies recognized[1]:
- D. s. striaticeps in western and central Andes of Colombia, south to Cauca
- D. s. occidentalis from southwestern Colombia (Nariño) south through Ecuador (both slopes of the Andes) to northeastern Peru (San Martín)
- D. s. peruviana on the east slope of Andes of central Peru (Huánuco to Cuzco)
- D. s. boliviana on the east slope of Andes of southern Peru (Puno) and northern Bolivia (La Paz)
It was formerly included in Long-tailed Antbird.
Habitat
Undergrowth in a variety of forest and second growth but almost always in areas with bamboo. Usually in areas at 1500-2600 m asl. sometimes lower.
Behaviour
Usually in pairs, and usually will not join mixed species flocks. Forages hidden in dense undergrowth where it can be detected by vocalizations.
