Identification

12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)

  • Short, straight black bill
  • Dark brown crown and mantle

Distribution

South America: Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • A. c. cupripennis:
  • A. c. caumatonota:
  • Andes of south-central Peru (Junín, Apurímac, Ayacucho and Cuzco)

Habitat

Paramo with scattered shrubs and trees.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of nectar taken from flowering terrestrial bromeliads, vines and trees.

Breeding

They construct a cup-shaped nest from moss and cobwebs.
