Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • Z. m. buxtoni
    • Western Java; a population on Sumatra also has been assigned to buxtoni, but the identification of Sumatran birds as buxtoni has been questioned
  • Z. m. melanurus
    • Mountains of central and eastern Java and Bali
