Otus elegans

Identification

  • Rufous brown
  • Brown facial disk
  • White lores
  • White line above eye
  • Cinnamon facial ruff with dark brown border
  • Rufous ear tufts with black spots
  • Red brown below with buff and dark brown mottling
  • Dark cinnamon throat and breast with dark brown streaks and white and brown mottling
  • Yellow iris
  • Olive grey bill
  • Grey brown feet

Distribution

Asia: found in Japan, Taiwan
Southeast Asia: Philippines, Luçon.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • O. e. elegans:
  • Ryukyu Islands (southern Japan)
  • O. e. interpositus:
  • Daito Islands (southern Japanese Archipelago)
  • O. e. botelensis:
  • Lan-yü Island (off south-eastern Taiwan)
  • O. e. calayensis:
  • Philippines: islands in the Batan and Babuyan island groups, including Itbayat, Batan, Sabtang, Calayan, Camiguin Norte, and perhaps others

Habitat

Semi tropical evergreen forest edges to 550m and farmland.
