Identification
Male 19–21 cm (7½-8¼ in); female 17–18 cm (6¾-7 in)
- Brownish overall plumage
- Rufous rump and upper tail
- Pale eyebrow
- Pale underparts
- Dark line through the eye
Distribution
Found throughout Australia, (except northern Cape York Peninsula and interior West Australia)
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in genus Megalurus, which has sometimes been spelt Cinclorhamphus mathewsi
Habitat
Open grassland, grassy open woodland, farmland.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of a wide variety of insects, including spiders and other small arthropods.
Breeding
The female builds the cup-shaped nest from grass. It is placed on the ground in thick grass or other low vegetation. The female incubates the eggs and raises the young.
Polygamous, some males mating with three or more females.
