Roll's Partridge - BirdForum Opus

28 cm.

  • Dull brown forehead to nape with dark speckles and streaks, usually whitish spot on lores
  • Black and white face, reddish-orange around eye
  • Mostly black throat
  • Boldly barred black and brown upperparts
  • Brownish wing-coverts
  • Pale reddish-brown breast
  • All-white belly
  • Boldly white-barred black flank feathers
  • Red legs

Sexes similar, females duller. Immatures undescribed.

Similar species

The pale reddish-brown breast which is sharply separated from the white belly, the bolder barring on the upperparts, the more brownish wing-coverts, the lack of dark grey lateral collar and the white-barred black flank feathers separate this species from Malayan Partridge. Sumatran Partridge has a grey head and underparts.


North-western Sumatra, Indonesia.
A poorly known species, presumably common in its range.


This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly included in Grey-breasted Partridge.


Forest in mountains and foothills.
Occurs from 500 to 2000 m.


No information available about diet and breeding.
Presumably a sedentary species.
