Rio Suno Antwren - BirdForum Opus

Myrmotherula sunensis

Identification

9 cm. An antwren with a short tail.

Male

  • Grey plumage
  • Darker wings
  • Black throat and centre of upper breast
  • White tipped wing-coverts

Female

  • Olive-brown upperparts, browner on wings and tail
  • Dull buff underparts with rufous tinge
  • Olive-brown tinge on sides, flanks and crissum
  • female yessupi is greyer above and less rufescent on underparts

Distribution

Patchily distributed in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.
Uncommon to rare in its range.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • M. s. sunensis on the eastern slope of the Andes of south-central Colombia and Ecuador
  • M. s. yessupi in east-central Peru (Huánuco, Pasco) and southwest Amazonian Brazil

Habitat

Found in understorey of lowland and foothill evergreen forest. Also in adjacent older second growth. Prefers dense, viny areas with abundant Heliconia and with lots of aerial leaf litter.
Occurs up to 900 m, mostly at 200 to 500 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Not much information available. Feeds on insects, probably also on spiders.
Usually seen in pairs, singly or in family groups, usually in mixed-species flocks with other insectivores. Forages by hopping and hitching along horizontal and inclined limbs, branches and twigs.

Breeding

No information available.

Movements

Presumably a resident species.
