Identification
43–51 cm (17-20 in)
Head is said to have a square profile. Yellow bill and green frontal shield separated by a red bridle is typical for the species. Legs yellowish-green but red closer to the body. Shows white undertail coverts and white leading edge of wing.
Distribution
Paraguay, Uruguay, southeastern Brazil, Argentina, and southern 2/3 of Chile.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Swamps and freshwater lakes, from lowland to mid elevations.
Behaviour
Its diet consists mainly of aquatic plants, often diving in fairly deep water, open water. They also feed by upending in shallower water.
