Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. p. persicus breeds in Arabian Sea and surrounding areas
- P. p. temptator breeds on Mohéli Island (Comoro Islands)
This species was formerly included in Audubon's Shearwater. Dickinson[3] includes it in Tropical Shearwater.
