Drymodes beccarii

Identification

Rufous-brown above and paler below, with a distinct dark vertical stripe from above the eye to the side of the throat. Black wings with broad white tips forming a prominent double wingbar.

Distribution

New Guinea and the Aru Islands.

Taxonomy

Three subspecies recognized:

  • D. b. beccarii in northwest New Guinea (Arfak and Wandammen mountains)
  • D. b. nigriceps in New Guinea (Cyclops Mountains and northern slope of Snow Mountains)
  • D. b. brevirostris in south and southeast New Guinea and Aru Islands

Formerly considered conspecific with Northern Scrub Robin.

Habitat

Dense vegetation, typically including rainforest.

Behaviour

Diet includes invertebrates, collected by actively digging in dense leaf litter. It moves mostly by hopping.
