  • Black head
  • Orange-yellow malar patch
  • White orbital ring
  • Olive-yellow throat and upper breast

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.


This species is sometimes placed in genus Pionopsitta.


Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • P. b. barrabandi
  • P. b. aurantiigena:


Primary lowland terra firme forest.



Their diet consists almost entirely of seeds and fruit.
