Nesotriccus incomtus

Phaeomyias incomta

Identification

11 cm. Overall a small greyish-brown flycatcher with two wing bars.

  • Upperside grey-brown
  • Wings more dusky but with pale feather edges and two wing bars that go from cinnamon to whitish
  • Face pale greyish
  • Supercilium wide but not strongly contrasting
  • Throat pale grey
  • Breast olive-grey, paler at center
  • Underside olive-grey to yellow
  • Eyes brown
  • Bill dark with pink base to lower mandible

Distribution

Central and South America: Southeasternmost Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas and Trinidad; range also just includes northern Brazil and northeastern Ecuador.

Taxonomy

This species was previously considered a part of Mouse-colored Tyrannulet which has been split into several species.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • N. m. eremonomus:
  • Pacific lowlands of Panama (Chiriquí to eastern Panama Province)
  • N. m. incomtus:

Habitat

Habitat ranges from mostly drier shrub and forest to edges of humid forest, but seems to prefer semi-open areas. Found in lowland and foothills.

Behaviour

Eats both insects and fruit, for example mistletoe.

Vocalisation

One song mostly heard near dawn is described as a few rising notes followed by a descending rattle. Later in the day, song given is a series of sharp, high-pitched "djiw" notes, accelerating and then dropping on the last 1-2 notes.
