Pale-bellied Tapaculo - BirdForum Opus

(Redirected from Matorral Tapaculo)

Alternative names: Mattorral Tapaculo, Matorral Tapaculo, Rufous-rumped Tapaculo

Scytalopus griseicollis

Identification

10-14cm. Blackish grey plumage, rufous rump.

Distribution

Colombia and westernmost Venezuela.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • griseicollis
  • infasciatus

These two have been proposed lumped, as no consistent difference existed between them. Instead, a new subspecies gilesi was proposed. Also mentioned was that the northernmost population which overlaps with Venezuela might actually constitute a different species[1].

Habitat

Dense vegetation in mountainous regions. Matorral is a habitat name commonly used in Chile and Brazil, but not in the range of this bird.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects.

It builds a ball shaped nest of root fibre and moss in cavities in banks or amongst the roots of trees.
