Identification
19cm (17½ in)
Long tail, long legs, plumage is reddish brown, the throat, breast and belly white and the face being marked with a distinctive eye-stripe.
Distribution
Fiji.
Very rare. Thought to be extinct but in 2003 some small populations were discovered on Viti Levu.
Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in genus Trichocichla
Subspecies
Two subspecies accepted[1]:
- C. r. rufus on Viti Levu (possibly extinct)
- C. r. cluniei on Vanua Levu (probably extinct, last seen 1974)
Habitat
Mountain forest.
Behaviour
It is a ground-feeder.
