Identification
Slightly smaller than the Greater Koa-Finch, at 19cm. Males had bright yellow head and breast, fading to a greener yellow towards the tail, with olive green above. Females were a drab greenish with yellowish highlights.
Distribution
Hawaii. Historically known only from the koa forests of North Kona between Hualalai and Mauna Loa, living alongside Greater Koa-Finches.

Like the greater koa finch, the lesser koa finch's diet consisted primarily of koa seed pods, supplemented with caterpillars and and possibly 'a'ali'i seeds.
