Klages's Antwren - BirdForum Opus

Myrmotherula klagesi

Identification

9-10 cm.

  • Black upperparts with white streaks
  • White tipped wing-coverts, flight-feathers edged white
  • 10 tail feathers, edged and tipped white
  • Weak black malar streak
  • White throat and underparts, greyer on flanks, with black streaks from throat to belly and flanks

Females have pale buff streaks on head and upperparts, and buff underparts with shorter streaks than male confined to breast and sides.

Similar species

Guianan Streaked Antwren is very similar. Klage's Antwren lacks white interscapular patch and has only 10 (instead of 12) tail feathers.)

Distribution

Found in a small area in central Amazonian Brazil (extreme lower Rio Branco, lower Rio Negro and east along Rio Amazon, including lower Rio Madeira to mouth of Rio Tapajós).
A fairly common to common restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Found in seasonally flooded lowland evergreen forest (igapó and várzea) up to 100m. Usually in canopy or subcanopy. Often at river-edge and on river islands.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects, their larvae and spiders.
Forages singly or in pairs in dense foliage, often high up in the canopy.
An active feeder, progressing rapidly by short hops and only making short pauses to scan fro prey.
Often in mixed-species flocks with other insect-eating species.

Breeding

No information.

Movements

Presumably a resident species.
