Overview

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary was designated as such in 1982. In 2010, an International Bird Watcher's Conference was held here.

It has a unique habitat in that it's a wetland with fresh water on one side while there is saltwater on the other side.

Area wise it's not large only encompassing 8 km/5 miles, but within that, there are 3 watchtowers that enable the visitor to find both sea and shorebirds. A moment not to miss is said to be the arrival of Cranes coming to roost at sunset.

But in more recent times, there have been reports of the area being turned into more of a picnic area with benches, etc. at the expense of loss of habitat and the resulting impact on birding. How that will play out in the future remains to be seen. [3][4]

Birds

Notable Species

Khijadiya has had, according to Avibase[1], only 51 species reported as having been sighted with 2 globally threatened species. The Rufous-tailed Lark has been reported here as an endemic to the country/region.

While eBird, on the other hand, records 311 species reported as having been sighted. But recently sighted species, according to their posted data, appears to have been confined to a few people reporting multiple species. [1][2]

Rarities

As of 31 October 2020, none have been noted for this location.
