Identification
16-18 cm.
- Light rusty-brown facial disc with prominent white eyebrows extending into ear-tufts
- Brown or rufous-brown upperparts, usually with rusty-buff hindneck-collar and whitish scapular stripe
- Barred flight-feathers
- Whitish to pale buff underside with black streaks superimposed on faint rufous vermiculations
- Feathered tarsus
- Golden-yellow eye
Juveniles are darker and more barred and vermiculated.
Similar species
Has more prominent white eyebrows and ear-tufts than Mountain Scops Owl. Note also golden rather than greenish-yellow iris.
Distribution
Endemic to western Java, Indonesia.
A restricted-range species, only known from Gunung Gede/Pangrango National Park and Gunung Tangkubanprahu.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Probably forms a superspecies with Rajah Scops Owl and sometimes considered conspecific with the latter or with Mountain Scops Owl.
Habitat
Mainly in primary montane forest with dense understorey. Also in rainforest with 40-55 m high canopy.
Occurs between 1500 and 2500 m, but recorded as low as 1000 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds mainly on insects, including mantids, crickets, grasshoppers and beetles. Also recorded to take small lizards and snakes.
Snatches its prey from trunk, foliage or from the ground.
Breeding
Few information. Families with two fledglings seen in July.
Movements
This is a sedentary species.
