Identification

16 cm

  • Bold head pattern
  • Streaked mantle
  • Pale underparts
  • Grey ear-coverts and centre of breast
  • White wing-bars

Male

  • Dark chestnut belly patch
  • Non-breeding male has a less noticeable belly patch and duller, more heavily streaked upperparts.

Distribution

Asia: found in north-eastern China and extreme north-eastern Korea; winters to east-central China.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Grass land with Siberia apricot and elms.

Behaviour

The diet includes seeds.
