Identification

13–15 cm (5-6 in)

  • Long, slightly forked tail

Male

  • Crimson lower forehead to lores and chin

Distribution

Asia: found in Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Western Himalayas, Bhutan, western China

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies recognized:

  • C. p. pulcherrimus in the Himalayas (Himachal Pradesh to Nepal, Bhutan and southeast Tibet)
  • C. p. argyrophrys in western China (Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and western Sichuan)

Formerly considered conspecific with Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch. The subspecies argyrophrys was also formerly placed in Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch.

Habitat

Mountainous forest edges, with rhododendrons and oak.

Behaviour

Diet

The forage low to, or on, the ground for a variety of seeds and buds.

Breeding

The construct a cup-shaped nest from grass, plant fibres, roots, strips of bark and animal hair. It is placed in a low bush or shrub.
