- Zapornia sandwichensis
Identification
Distribution
Formerlly Hawaii. All of the collected specimens are from Hawai'i Island. Hawaiian Rail were last reliably reported in 1884 in the Puna District of Hawai'i Island, and active searches in the following decade did not yield any birds. The fossil record of the southeastern Hawaiian Islands includes many species of rail, some of which are very similar to the Hawai'i Island specimens, but the evolution towards flightlessness suggests that similiar rails on the other islands should be considered separate species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Also placed in genus Porzana.
Habitat
Shrubland.
Behaviour
Flightless bird.
