Identification
15.5 cm. A small to medium-sized Monarch with a distinctive plumage
- Black forehead, face to ear-coverts, chin and throat
- Dark grey crown and upperparts
- Blackish wings and tail (with white outer rectrices)
- White underparts
Sexes similar. Juveniles undescribed, immatures more blue-grey on upperparts and with peachy wash on breast.
Similar species
Differs from Spectacled Monarch by lack of rufous in plumage.
Distribution
South-east Asia: found in South-western Flores (western Lesser Sundas, Indonesia).
An endangered restricted-range species. Threatened by habitat loss.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in genus Monarcha.
Habitat
Primary hill semi-evergreen forest. Also in old secondary and partially degraded forest.
Recorded from 350 to 1000m, mostly at 700 to 900m.
Behaviour
Diet
Not well known. Feeds apparently mainly on small invertebrates.
Forages actively in trees singly, in pairs or in small mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
A recently fledged chick recorded in late August. No other information.
Movements
A resident species.
