Overview

A small lake with extensive surrounding marshland and reedbeds, over 100 species are known to have bred and many others have been recorded in the immediate area.

Birds

Notable Species

Among the breeders are Black-necked Grebe and Purple Heron, both bitterns and White Stork. Garganey, Gadwall, Water Rail and Spotted Crake and Little Crake are found in the reedbeds.

Raptors breeding in the area include Western Honey Buzzard, both kites, Western Marsh Harrier and Northern Hobby, and in the surrounding woodlands are Black Woodpecker and Black Grouse.

Numerous wetland and woodland passerines breed. Waders, waterfowl and Black Tern occur on passage.

Access and Facilities

The Federsee is in Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany near Reidlingen, to the east of Ulm. From Reidlingen turn left outside the town to Buchau and head for the Federsee Museum.

There is a small entrance fee to the reserve which has boardwalks and boats for hire.
