18 cm, no major difference male to female

  • Upperside brownish grey with contrasting rufous-chestnut wings and tail
  • Underside greyish buff with olive wash that is strongest to the rear
  • Buff supercilium, partial eye-ring, lores and throat; orange wash on lores and throat areas.
  • Iris is brown
  • Bill quite stout, upper mandible brown with lower mandible greenish-horn to greenish-yellow, paler than upper mandible


South America: found in Amazonian basin of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, and a seemingly isolated population in south-east Venezuela.


This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 2 subspecies.

Tall lowland moist forests on variety of grounds Mostly below 500 m but occurs to 1200 m asl.


Frequently seen with mixed species flocks. It feeds mostly on outer branches, hanging leaf-clumps, leaves trapped in vines, etc. Presumably prefers insects and other invertebrates.
