Genus: Psilorhinus

Description

A genus that includes only Brown Jay. The Brown Jay has a furcular pouch of the intraclavicular air sac that is most likely used to produced a sound like a hiccup, a structure not found in any other species of Jay.

Taxonomy

Psilorhinus is a genus in the family Corvidae. It has also been placed in genus Cyanocorax but the AOU taxonomic committee argued for assigning Brown Jay to Psilorhinus based on DNA evidence: Brown Jay is closer related to birds of genus Calocitta than to genus Cyanocorax.
