Overview

KwaZulu-Natal (a province of South Africa) is situated south of Mozambique and eSwatini and east of Lesotho on the south-east coast of Africa.

It has a fantastic variety of landscapes and habitats with a diversity of plant and animal species to match. Within 200 km of the port of Durban the Drakensberg mountains rise to an altitude of over 3000 m. Protected within the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park are highland and montane grasslands, Afromontane forests, Protea savannas and wetlands. At the other extreme, in the north-east of the Province, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park includes sub-tropical swamp forests, mangroves, some of the highest forested coastal dunes in the world, dry sandforest, bushveld, lakes, wetlands and grasslands.

This habitat diversity is reflected in a substantial KwaZulu-Natal bird list, which includes about 470 species that are regularly recorded, with about 200 more species recorded less frequently.
