Distribution
Endemic to New Zealand.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
Three subspecies:
- X. l. stokesii on the North Island (extinct around 1850)
- X. l. longipes on the South Island
- X. l. variabilis on small islands around Stewart Island.
Habitat
Dense, montane forest, coastal forest and scrub.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet included invertebrates.
Breeding
It was a ground nester.
