39–45 cm (15¼-17¾ in)

  • Rust brown plumage
  • Rose or green tint to neck
  • Pale eye streak
  • Red eyering
  • Blue-grey iris
  • Chestnut cap
  • Red legs and feet
  • Long tail

Distribution

Coastal eastern Australia (Cape York to eastern Victoria).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].
It was formerly considered conspecific with Slender-billed Cuckoo-Dove under the name Macropygia amboinensis.
Two subspecies, quinkan and robinsoni are not generally recognised[2].

Habitat

Scrubland and rainforest; particularly at forest edges, clearings and in secondary forest.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of seeds and fruit with the addition of some berries.

Breeding

They build a platform nest from sticks and vines. The single cream white egg is incubated by both parents for 18 days; both parents care for the young.
