Identification
15–16 cm (6-6¼ in)
Male nominate
- Black forehead
- Red hindcrown
- Blue line from lores over the eye
- Yellow patch under the eye
- Blue ear-coverts
- Red at back of malar
- Black throat
- Red at top of breast
Female duller; some have blue on forehead
Immature; duller. Reds may be absent. blue and black throat, with some white.
Variations
P. e. cyaneus apparently has a blue throat.
Distribution
Southeast Asia: found in Indochina, Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia and Greater Sundas.
Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. e. eximius:
- Mountains of northern Borneo
- P. e. cyaneus:
- Northern Borneo (Mount Kinabalu)
Habitat
Wet mountain forests at heights around 900–1387 m (though sometimes lower). They generally keep to the canopy.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet appears to consist of fruits, particularly figs, but little is known.
