Psilopogon eximius

Identification

15–16 cm (6-6¼ in)
Male nominate

  • Black forehead
  • Red hindcrown
  • Blue line from lores over the eye
  • Yellow patch under the eye
  • Blue ear-coverts
  • Red at back of malar
  • Black throat
  • Red at top of breast

Female duller; some have blue on forehead
Immature; duller. Reds may be absent. blue and black throat, with some white.

Variations

P. e. cyaneus apparently has a blue throat.

Distribution

Southeast Asia: found in Indochina, Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia and Greater Sundas.

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • P. e. eximius:
  • P. e. cyaneus:
  • Northern Borneo (Mount Kinabalu)

Habitat

Wet mountain forests at heights around 900–1387 m (though sometimes lower). They generally keep to the canopy.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet appears to consist of fruits, particularly figs, but little is known.
