Distribution
South America: found in Colombia and Peru.
Taxonomy
Austral Rail (R. antarcticus) was formerly included within Bogota Rail.
Subspecies1
- R. s. semiplumbeus:
- Andes of Colombia (Boyacá and Cundinamarca)
- R. s. peruvianus:
- One 1886 record from an unknown location in Peru
Habitat
High-altitude grassland, freshwater lakes, and freshwater marshes, 2,500-4,000 m.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, molluscs, dead fish, frogs, tadpoles and plant material.
Breeding
They nest in reed beds adjoining shallow water.
