  • Narrow, pointed conical bill
  • Dark head and throat
  • Blue back
  • Rufous lower underparts

Sexes similar


South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.



There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • C. s. intermedium:
  • Andes of western Venezuela (Mérida and Táchira)
  • C. s. sitticolor:
  • C. s.r cyaneum:
  • Andes of Peru to western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)

Another subspecies pallidum is not recognised by all authorities[1].


Cloud forest, forest borders and stunted elfin woods.



Their main diet consists of insects. While they do forage in pairs and small groups, they are generally seen in mixed species flocks, particularly those containing other tanagers.
