Cerulean blue crown and nape, sides of head black with yellow spot below eye, upperparts grey-blue, underparts yellow, black thighs.

Similar Species

Lacrimose Mountain Tanager has a different, less elongated bill shape and overall shorter bill. That species shows an additional yellow area behind the ears lacking in Black-cheeked Mountain-Tanager.


Endemic to the Santa Marta mountains in north-eastern Colombia.


This is a monotypic species[1].

This species has in the past been considered conspecific with Lacrimose Mountain Tanager2.


Forests edges and second growth at mid to high elevation2.


The diet includes fruit.
