Identification

14–16·5 cm (5½-6½)

• Black and white overall plumage
• Large white wing patch

Distribution

Found on several of the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Monarcha.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized²:

• S. b. barbatus:

• Solomon Islands (Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Choiseul and Santa Isabel)

• S. b. malaitae:

• Malaita (Solomon Islands)

Habitat

Moist lowland primary and tall secondary forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists almost entirely of small invertebrates.
