Identification

  • Black head and breast
  • Blackish-brown mantle, back and wing

Distribution

Australasia: found in Papua New Guinea.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • L. m. melaena:
  • New Britain (south-eastern Bismarck Archipelago)
  • L. m. bukaensis:
  • Buka (Solomon Islands)

Habitat

Dry grassland, swamps, gardens and open forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of seeds and sugar cane seed heads.
