Identification

30–33 cm

• Greyish-black axillaries and underwing-coverts, barred black and white
• Pinkish eye ring
• Pink bare orbital skin

Distribution

South-east Asia: New Guinea, northern Moluccas Islands, Aru Islands, western Papuan Islands, and New Ireland.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies:¹

• G. p. plumbeiventris:

• Northern Moluccas, New Guinea, Misool, Karkar and New Ireland

• G. p. hoeveni:

• Aru Islands and Trans-Fly lowlands of southern New Guinea

Habitat

Floor of primary and marsh forests, swamps and wet grass.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of insects and small animals.
