Identification

10cm.

• Rufous lower back and rump
• Two white wing bars
• Long tail
• Crown: black in male, brown in female

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

There are 3 subspecies;

• E. s. signata:

• South-eastern Colombia north-eastern Peru and north-western Amazonian Brazil (River Negro region)

• E. s. spodioptila (elaopteryx):

• Southern Venezuela to the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil

• E. s. meridionalis:

• South-central Amazonian Brazil (River Madeira to lower River Tapajós)

A fourth subspecies, E. s. elaopteryx,^[2] is not recognised by all authorities

Habitat

Moist lowland forests.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects.

Breeding

Two eggs are laid and are incubated by both parents, who also both care for the young.
