Identification
45 cm
- Frequently shows prominent ear tufts
- Upperside mostly dusky brown with both paler (especially shoulders) and darker or rufous blotches
- Underside whitish with dark barring becoming sparse on lower belly
- Facial disk pale with thin dark barring and surrounded by a black rim
Similar Species
In some areas compete with Pharaoh Eagle Owl for habitat.
Distribution
South-western Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and United Arab Emirates.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Arabian Eagle-Owl formerly was included in Spotted Eagle-Owl.
Habitat
Depends on wooded areas which in this corner of the world means wadis. Presence of water might be important.
Behaviour
Suspected to mainly eat invertebrates but also some vertebrates such as smaller birds.
Vocalisation
Two notes of the same pitch, the first being long and the second having a tremulous quality.
