    Norfolk mammals

Early one morning last week, pulled onto the main street in the village and one bombed past the car, running full speed down the road! It may be that their impact on humans rather than the ecosystem dictates any future levels of control.

Saw 8 Chinese Water Deer on the patch today, 4 at Claxton the largest group. Clearly on the increase- what might/has the impact of this be/been? Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk mammals

Enjoying Soprano and Common Pip of an evening in Surlingham, but the highlight for me are c3 Noctule who emerge before dark and hunt high over the paddock before we go to bed. A little morbid this, but cat-related deaths have confirmed the existence of Bank and Field Vole in our area, along...

    Norfolk mammals

One or two Bats in the garden last night, probable Pip sp. but upon running in to grab the detector they had departed. The temperature dropped significantly by dark so perhaps they fed at dusk and then headed back to roost. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk mammals

Following FOON'S results, here are my recordings for TG3206. Minimum 5 species: Brown Long-eared, Common Pip, Soprano Pip, Noctule and Myotis species. Unconfirmed recordings of Natterer's and Brandt's. Out last night at Surlingham Church Marsh with a recorder attempting to confirm...

    Norfolk mammals

I was very fortunate to watch a mother Chinese Water Deer bring her fawn down to drink from the lagoon at Surlingham Church Marsh last night. This is the second year in a row I have recorded a youngster here. A Vole sp. scurried away before I could apply an ID. At Wheatfen last Thursday a Fox...

Thanks James. So just to clarify- a license is no problem, but are you breaking the law if you accidentally capture a Shrew, when in-fact you had targeted Mice? Cheers, Jim.

Thanks for that Steve. The Wheatfen event sounds ideal (thanks for the reminder) and I can now remember why I didn't book straight away; birthday weekend! But no doubt this would be well worth it. Some helpful Bat info there too. To add to what Steve has already said, of the 2 Pipistrelle...

    Norfolk mammals

Hi Johny, Bats are not the easiest of our Mammal groups to 'see', for obvious reasons. However, now is a good time to get a look at some of species which emerge a little earlier. Last night, I conducted the first of 2 NBMP surveys at a repeat site, the Dussindale estate and recreation grounds...

Not at all Chris, keep 'em coming! Can't advise on the fish problem though. Jim.

Couple of Bat surveys to report. Last week, on the 13th I joined Norwich Bat Group for a walk round UEA broad. The recorders had over 1000 files to sort through, such was the high level of activity. I recorded Common and Soprano Pipistrelle, Daubenton's and a single Natterer's. Noctule were...

Best place I know of to view them is Rockland Marshes, from the footpath that leads to the RSPB hide and the broad. Clear views across a meadow rather than a back end disappearing into the reeds. Surlingham Church Marsh isn't bad either; view from the old ruins on the hill. Cheers, Jim.

A Daubenten's Bat hunting in broad daylight was a nice surprise in The Brecks yesterday. Jim.

All signed up Stuart. Something for us patchwork challengers to consider? Which will be the most bio diverse square in terms of Bats? I will be joining in down at Wheatfen and surrounds. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk mammals

Hi Robin, Lovely photo. What size are we talking? Flight pattern? Amongst trees or open ground? I have my suspicions but could do with a few details. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk mammals

If anyone is interested, I have added a write up of a Bat hibernation roost visit to my blog. This was with the Norwich Bat group at Whitlingham. Natterer's, Brown Long-eared and Daubenten's the 3 species encountered, and a super morning it was too. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk mammals

RSPB led Bat walk round Surlingham Church Marsh last night. Cracking views of 2 Noctules at dusk hunting over the Yare, I initially mistook the animals for a Snipe. Echolocation frequencies proved me wrong. If anyone is interested, look towards Wood's End at around 6.30-7pm for these beasts...

    Norfolk mammals

Early-ish at Buckenham this morning, I was lucky to observe a Stoat chasing 4 Pied Wagtail. This was not a ferocious hunt, but seemingly play and practise. A lovely sight. The only picture I managed is on my blog, with an account of the morning's happenings. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk mammals

You beat me to it David! Nice one, a Mammal thread much needed here. Had an evening visit to Strumpshaw fen on Thursday, after Bats. Recorded 5 species, including Soprano and Common Pipistrelle (relatively common throughout the site) Brown Long-eared (woodland edge near meadow trail)...
