Luck was obviously on your side as the Spotted Sandpiper was not seen again after you left yesterday and several people dipped. It reappeared this morning though apparently. Glad you got the warbler. Steve.

For the Spotted you need to pay admission to The Swannery. Normally £12.50 for adult but I think there is an offer at moment for about £10 (maybe even cheaper online) opens at 10am & last entry 4pm. Closes at 5pm. The bird frequents the shoreline by an outlying hide that is only accessible on...

Dipper on Chesil Beach! Really? If correct this will be first in the Chesil Bank/Fleet recording area since 1982 & that was on the mill stream at Abbotsbury. Never recorded on actual Fleet or beach before as far as I'm aware. Where was this Ferry bridge? Steve.

Neither are regular at The Swannery I'm afraid. I haven't seen either for a few years now. Back in the 80's Bewick's were almost guaranteed during cold snaps but that was when there was still a regular flock on the Frome near Woodsford. Steve.

As a postscript four unaccompanied Barnacle Geese (ie not with Canadas), of unknown origin, flew east over The Swannery this morning. Also at The Swannery this morning were the three Long-tailed Ducks and the nine Scaup still. Steve.

Yes 2 Barnacles arrived at Abbotsbury on 30 November and were last seen on the 4 December. They mostly associated with the Canadas but were also often on their own. They were fairly wary and I kinda assumed they were the vanguard of the 50+ flock that has visited the West Fleet in the last few...

Today At Abbotsbury Swannery A pretty good day today... had a 'Ringtail' Hen Harrier over the meadows as I arrived this morning (which was also over the reedbeds later) and then 2 Barnacle Geese joined the Canada flock. These may or may not be the first 2 of the now annual presumed wild...

Today At Abbotsbury Swannery There are now 2 Long-tailed Ducks present but very distant & slightly east of swannery embayment. Other wildfowl highlights were at least 5 Scaup & 3 Goldeneye. Steve.

    Dorset birding

Today At Abbotsbury Swannery Wildfowl highlights were a Long-tailed Duck (the third this autumn/winter but just possibly all the same bird?), 2 Goosander west and the 1st w Common Scoter still but I could only find 4 Scaup among the several hundred Pochard and Tufted Duck and a few R-b...

    Dorset birding

Today At Abbotsbury Swannery Much as yesterday... the 7 Scaup and Common Scoter still among the commoner duck, 40+ Med Gulls (still a good count this far up The Fleet), the regular male Marsh Harrier, no sign of yesterday's Blackwit but a single Dunlin was new in and best of the passerines were...

    Dorset birding

Hi, thought I'd start posting a few sightings from The Swannery at Abbotsbury. My intention is to move my current Swannery Sightings blog to Birdforum but I need to rack up a few posts first so here goes... Didn't have much time to bird today due to work commitments but checked the...
