Best bird recorders for field recording

Favorite is the Sound Devices MixPre II with 32-bit recording that minimizes problems with not having enough gain while recording. There is a good guide on Cornell Labs for this recorder. I power mine all day with a single 20000 AH Anker battery pack using the recorders USB-C port and a short...

Best bird recorders for field recording

Better field recorders have ports for XLR mic connections. Best mics are ones used with a parabolic dish that magnifies sounds for the mic. Shotgun mics are more convenient but much less effective. Most of my mics can be self-powered with an internal battery so easier to use with a camera as...

Best bird recorders for field recording

Retail price for the MixPre-3 II is $900 which is not cheap but also a lot less than what many people spend on their binoculars and scopes. Better results consistently with the 32-bit float that was designed for production audio recording but a blessing for those recording birds in the field.

Best bird recorders for field recording

IO bought the Zoom F-6 but found the user interface to be terrible and like something designed in the 1980's. Returned it and bought the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II sound recorder that is vastly better with its touchscreen and menu structure. It is what Cornell Lab uses and they provide setup...

Best bird recorders for field recording

With the SSD MixPre-3 II and the MixPre-6 II recorders I can record for 12 hours using a single Anker 335 power bank and USB-C cable. More compact setup with the USB-C cable running to the power bank instead of using a sled and special L compatible batteries. The better mics use XLR...

Best bird recorders for field recording

MixPre 6 II that has the 32-bit floating feature as with the MixPre 3 II recorder. For bird recording the Mix Pre 3 II is all one needs and one of the Strut field bags and a power bank with a USB-C cable. AA batteries have a very short life and the most bang for the buck is with something like...

Best bird recorders for field recording

MixPre-3 II powered by a USB-C cable to a power bank is great with its 32-bit float capabilities. Compact and lightweight at 16.8 ounces and it can be used with XLR or phone mic inputs. I like being able to use it in a shoulder bag and either hand hold the mic or have the mic on a stand. The...
