Thanks for telling me you were posting on here Nick. Just saved this old favourite from the Apex as my Desktop background. See you down Greylake in the winter.

    Swift repairs in UK

Advice please. I've recently dropped my Swift HHS 828s and broken one of the twist up eye-cups. I've taped up a temporary repair but am looking to get them repaired properly, and cleaned and serviced at the same time. Is there an official Swift service centre in the UK. If not, any recommendations?

Swift Audubon HHS 8.5x44 Roofs vs Opticron BGA Classic 8x42 vs Nikon Monarch 8x42

A few favourable comments on this old thread. Went to Slimbridge last week with my mate who owns the Zeiss FLs, but he'd forgotten to bring them so I loaned him my Swifts and used my old Optolyth Alpins myself. He was still very impressed with them, as am I...

which Hide clamp for Velbon travel tripod?

I should think the Delta G clamp for £39 from In Focus would fit. See http://www.at-infocus.co.uk/delta.html#accessories.

Is it a 'hooper' swan or a 'wooper' swan?

Tory MPs go for whipping not a "hipping", so it's "wooper" for me. It's clearly related to the call, however inaccurate, and you whoop (woop) rather than "hoop" with joy whenever you see one, don't you? There are 7 currently on the Somerset levels - 3 adult and 4 juveniles.

    Advice wanted on bins choice

And don't forget to try the Swift HHS 828 8.5x44 roofs http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1007669

    first "proper" binoculars

The Swift Audubon HHS 828 8.5x44 roofs would seem to fit your criteria. I've got a pair. They're excellent all-rounders and value for money, relatively light, ergonomically comfortable etc.

    Farne Islands

Not much to add re the Farnes. You hardly need bins, never mind a scope, but you do need a hat. Late April may be a bit early but, from Beadnell, it's well worth walking south down the beach towards High Newton. There's a mainland tern colony there, fenced off on the beach, just south of a small...

Johnny Kindom show next Tuesday 8.30pm

Absolutely. A breath of fresh air. Look forward to it every week. And don't forget that most of the footage we see is probably by the BBC professionals behind him rather than his own stuff.

    Binocular Repairs

I took my Alpins into Ace Optics (UK sole dealers) in Bath for a badly needed 15 year service and they use a company in Glasgow who posted them back to me direct, but you could send direct. I'm told Opticron will also service Optolyths and, in my experience, both are very good.

    Advice on a bird scope

My SDL eyepiece doesn't fit the second-hand MM2 I recently bought (which has it's own dedicated zoom but also accepts my fixed 32XW HDL Opticron lens, albeit rteduced to 18X), but it's been excellent on my ES80 GA ED. You've already got an excellent £200 lens in the SDL, so I'd save the money...

    Looking for a scope ?????

There's a straight Opticron with ED glass on ebay at present with 3 days to go. Would be a bargain if you can get it for £300. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220188497119&mfe=sidebar

    New moves for Badger cull!

Signed, but what about those landowners with badgers on their land that nobody else knows about and which they're unwilling to reveal to the authorities? There must be thousands of setts on private, non-farmland, or on farms where the farmer is quite willing to protect them and not disclose...

    JOHNNY KINGDOM 28th December

Sorry, but I think that's (a) snobbish (b) precious and (c) unrealistic. This was peak time TV, not BBC4 at midnight. JK is clearly a popular, personable character who appeals to many, including those who know little if anything about the subject matter; and he brings to it that sense of wonder...

    JOHNNY KINGDOM 28th December

Well I enjoyed it, so there. What did everyone expect. They simply don't and never will 'do' programmes for ornithologists or wildlife geeks only on peak time TV, as they'd be the only people who'd watch them. But they can do programmes that appeal to a wider audience, including thousands who...

    £200-£300 Binoculars

Don't forget to try the Swift HHS too. Excellent value at around £250 (by rip-off Britain standard pricings) - See http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=101891.

HR WP 8x42 (and RSPB HG 7x42)

Thanks Rich. I thought so. Swift seem underrated on here for some reason. I've got the 828 roofs and they're excellent but I'd heard the 820 porros were something else and at just £10 more than the Opticrons sound a real bargain! ED version must be superb, but it's significantly more of course...

Zeiss Victory 8x32 Fl Or Swarovski 8 X 32 El

The guy in In Focus at Slimbridge on Monday told me that it's their top seller by far. I've got the Mk I version with the 32xw fixed and SDL 20-60x zoom lenses and have been very pleased with it. Subject to condition £320 is a bargain.

    Tripod carrying devices

And here http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?p=1075404#post1075404. In Focus's 'Scopak' is excellent. I've just carried my Opticron ES 80 GA ED and Velbon tripod around with it all day today and hardly knew it was on my back. Zipped pouch also took my flask and spare lenses with room to spare.
