    Common Nighthawks in daylight?

I've seen these flying around at about 2 pm. It was cloudy, but not dark - I'm not sure why they'd be out.

This is the first quiz I've ever written. Answer any you can- who will be first to get all 16? 1. How many species of waxwing are in the United States? 2. What is the currently official name for what used to be called a Marsh Hawk? 3. What plover is often found nesting in parking lots? 4...

    Southwestern United States opportunities?

In the US southwest, there are still huge regions almost empty of human population (Loving County, Texas has over 660 sq. mi. and only 60 people!). Surely, some of this land could be bought up (considering its low price) by organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, Audubon, or whatever...

    Hybrid birds

Are hybrid birds fertile? I would think some of the hybrid ducks are, considering how many of them there are ... Will there someday be a generalized species of half-domestic duck?

What was the first conservation law?

Does anyone know? The earliest example I can think of was the prohibition against destroying an enemy city's fruit trees and killing a mother bird in the biblical Book of Deuteronomy. Any earlier ones (Hammurabi, maybe)?

    Winning or losing?

What do you think - is conservation winning out, or losing, in the grand scheme of things? From a US perspective, I would say the Eastern half of the country is very hopeful - it's suffered much more damage, but it seems to be on the upswing. In the first decade of the 20th century, the...

Are there any "tricks" to birding in the Northwoods area (Boreal forest)? (Such as how to tell which areas are the best habitats?) How does one find Great Gray/Long-eared/Boreal/Northern Saw-Whet/Northern Hawk-Owls? Can anyone living in northern North America or who has experience there share...

    Grackle ID question

Does anyone have any tips on telling Boat-tailed/Great-tailed/Common Grackles apart? I normally just say "grackle".

Please help ID this finch (?)

I saw a "finchy" bird that had glossy brownish-black plumage. The closest match I could find would be some sort of female finch, but they're not so glossy or so dark. I was on the East Coast (of North America) at the time.

    Mobbing

One thing I have never understood is, why don't mobbed raptors turn and attack the birds mobbing them? Does it use less energy to fly away? I've read the raptor has lost its advantage of surprise, but surely it would have some chance, and would likely scare off the mobbers?

    What birds are increasing?

Despite the general decline of birds, some species, such as grackles, benefit from human activity. What birds in your area are increasing?
