Small bird I.D. - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Came across a delightful flock of small sparrow/finch birds enjoying a fall harvest in the yard. They do not look like juncos but are mostly a dark greyish colour, black eyes, sharp dark bill, whitish underparts ... the main identifiably different thing is that they have 2 white feathers in...

Entrepeneur in the photo, uh, "borrowing" business ...

While his site appears to be a "for fun" item; he is using robots to comb for and display photos on his website. So for those who don't want their photos included on his website here's his "remove my site from yours" page: http://www.ghettodriveby.com/remove-my-site/ "Cute" how he provides...

    Got 'em! Merlin "posing" ...

Hi, Had a great day birding today; the weather was beautiful and the birds were all out showing off their winter coats. Blue Jays, American Tree Sparrows, Chickadees, doves, Crows, nuthatches, etc ... AND the Merlin came and actually "posed" while we took its photo.

    Browser Updates

Heads up for Microsoft's February updates ... IE7 is included. If you do NOT want it; make sure to turn OFF "automatic updates". You can get the updates you do want by manually checking for them over at their site. Not to debate the issue; IE7 is a good browser "but" it doesn't work with all...

    Caterpillar I.D. request

Was reading of an unusual caterpillar which apparently can be found in graveyards. As it happened the very next graveyard in which I wandered, on the very tombstone I was seeking, I found this little fella. I realize the chances of it being the same kind as what I was reading about are slim ...

Bird of prey I.D. request (Ottawa Canada)

It did some soaring but no circling ... was very high and far, flying further away ... sadly I couldn't get a focus fix with the camera so no, I don't expect a sub-species I.D. here ... but ballpark would be great! Hawk, falcon, eagle ... ??? Thanks.

    Mallard x ? (Ottawa Canada)

Mallard x ? It does not look like any of the American Black hybrids I've seen. The full photo has shadows from the Mallard drake falling on the hybrid. The hybrid has orange feet and the darker feathers. Thanks.

    Canadian Geese types (Ottawa Canada)

I know most of the Geese flying by are the big Canadian Geese ... at this spot there's supposedly several "types" of them that fly through. As some of these in the photo appear to have shorter necks is there any chance that these are of the other types? Thanks.

    Duck I.D. (Ottawa Canada)

Off in the distance was this lone duck calling and calling ... presumably a tad lost off its flight path! Any ideas as to what it might be? Thanks.

    White-Breasted Nuthatch

Last weekend we were pleasantly surprized by this friendly little nuthatch that apparently checks out what the chickadees are doing. So this past weekend we returned to the spot and there were at least 3 or 4 white-breasted nuthatches checking out what the chickadees were up to ... eating seeds...

There were hundreds of these ducks flocking yesterday, sadly none near enough to get a good picture of them. Is there any chance somebody has a good guess as to what these ones might be? Thanks.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? (fun spotting this)

While out birding the other day; I was keeping an eye to the skies for the osprey as there is a pair which frequent the location I was at. Well, not exactly a bird ... but thought you might enjoy seeing this ... it is a rare sight.

    Merganser? Ottawa

This little bird was having quite the time bathing itself so, it appears to be white underneath with brownish spots ... it is much smaller than the Mallards. Thanks.

    Strange woodduck? Ottawa

Got a few photos of this bird which appears to be a woodduck except for the strange markings on its face. I'm not sure if all of these photos are of the same bird. If the first one has a neck shadow from its beak, they might be ... the second and third one I'm pretty sure are the same bird...
