    My tablet dilemma

Osmand is brilliant for walking. It autoroutes along footpaths and trails, which is really excellent. I wouldn't use it for driving though. It has no live traffic, unless someone has devised something very clever to pull in live data. It could literally cost you hours routing you straight into a...

what are the odds on getting 6 pairs of faulty binoculars, in succession?! 5 from a dealer, 1 from the manufacturer

Thermal scope image conversion to alarm sound?

Haha, so this would work if the thermal was displaying it's image on a 1st phone screen, and a 2nd phone was watching the first phone screen, with motion detection sending notifications to your 3rd phone! Just a question of simplifying it now!

Most Popular Canon IS for birding ?

Yes, particularly if I hold a viewfinder a few inches front of my eyes, I notice pulsing, etc. It does seem reduced to un-noticeable if it's pushed against my face... I'm not going to investigate further as I suspect it's something that once you are aware of, it'll never go away, and bug me !

Most Popular Canon IS for birding ?

There's a lot of reference to "shake" on here. Maybe I'm lucky and have a very stable frame?!, As it's something I've never noticed as a problem. Without being too personal, where is the shake originating, and can't it be resolved by a different technique in holding the binoculars? I do notice...

Sticky thread for best birding apps

Ebird, ebird, and ebird! The hotspots have illustrated checklists, and you can scroll thru the species. Save them as offline pages on your phone browser and you have a pretty good basic field guide for the site. You can do the same with your target species for the region, but I avoid this as it...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Does it have little stabilisers to press against your forehead, like one of their binocular models? ( With far less magnification). This scope needs stabilisers, and suction pads and more stabilisers to couple to your head, chin, nose, cheek. Or image stabilization. Has it got that?

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

In reply to "So actually you need two scopes... I thought bird watching was a cheap hobby... not anymore, having 3 Swarovski's already" I was saying you don't need 2 scopes, or 3 swarovskis.. that won't make you a better birder. 1 pair of binocs, 1 scope, and you are good to go. As indeed I am.

New Camera Suggestions (Nikon Coolpix P1000 focus)

I agree, and as a beginner, you could do far worse than putting the camera on a tripod, subject in the screen, and just pressing the video button (set to 4k video).. The 4k is sharp even into the digital zoom, which s something ridiculous like 3000mm plus 4x on top of that! then going back and...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

I know. It's just big company marketing seems to be trying to steal the soul of our hobby! You need this for a. This for b, another slightly different one in case you ever find yourself in c. Birding is, and should be chaos! You should be finding yourself completely unprepared all the time...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

I did quote it / reply to it. But ok, at least give me some credit for the ability to time travel, if my post 7.41pm GMT was directed at Hermann's post 8.11pm GMT. ? If people want to collect binoculars and scopes that's up to them, obviously. But I'm going to call it out if it is being...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

You know I wasn't replying to Hermann?! I replied to post #303 who is being led to believe that to be a birdwatcher he needs 2 scopes and 3 swarovskis... That's nonsense.. he can live a full, rewarding, challenging, birding life seeing just about every European species with 1 pair of...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

1 pair of binoculars, 1 scope and/or 1 camera if you like. I bet if you restricted yourself to that, you wouldn't miss a single animal compared to this weird inventory that is like having a set of golf clubs, but only being able to carry one of each.

Twitching by numbers - Book only available on Amazon

Except the book is still for sale, now at £23.! I'm not sure if the author has any say now? Its being sold by Chiron Media and the Book Depository. What are they going to do, burn the unsold copies?! Go after the author for breaching a contract? I'm guessing this is an unusual mess lol

    Twitching and suppression

I think many UK counties have got to the point where if a rarity turns up, you can pretty much predict the order in which birders turn up to see it, barring some lucky people in the immediate vicinity or people out of the country! If you are low down on that hierarchy, and feeling hard done by...

Mastodon Instance for Bird and Nature Lovers

There's nothing to stop individuals blocking users and other servers themselves by the look of it. Also I'm now noticing a few "BBC" accounts with breaking news feeds, plus the the likes of rspb and wildlife trusts with a presence on the mastodon platform. I can see myself deleting twitter...

Mastodon Instance for Bird and Nature Lovers

The way I sussed out Mastodon was to go to the browser version of mastodon, find Settings, and enable "advanced web interface". Then you should see columns. (a bit like twitter's tweetdeck) Your home feed shows content from all your follows, and saved hashtag searches. The local feed shows...

    Gannets dying in Dorset

This outbreak seems to be unprecedented according to the news. Are there any measures in place at reserves to prevent people spreading it about ? Footbaths at the entrance/exit for example?
